Follett is no slouch in this area, though! He is a meticulous researcher and he is only exercising his novelist's imagination in such instances. I have enormous respect for his work in these two books, but they're not all to my liking. Thanks for the comment and cheers! However my main concern is that Follet imbues the characters of Merthin and Caris with a 19th century world view into the 14th century.
